On February 4, 2025, the Medical Education, Staff Development, and Appraisal Unit hosted an online training session via Zoom titled “Considering the Whole Problem: How to Write and Think Analytically in Academia.” The session was led by Dr. Sean McGann, Programme Manager for the MSc in Medical Education for Healthcare Professionals at the University of Warwick.
Dr. McGann, a specialist in quality assurance and change management, shared insights from his extensive experience in education across Georgia, Kazakhstan, Algeria, Ireland, and the UK. Participants explored the differences between description, analysis, evaluation, and reflection and practiced applying the IDEALS method to structure their writing effectively.
The training provided valuable strategies for developing analytical thinking and enhancing academic writing skills. Both academic staff and graduate students benefited from this insightful session.
