The Department of Family and Community Medicine at An-Najah National University’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences recently conducted a series of impactful awareness sessions on Basic Life Support (BLS) and choking management for children and adults. These sessions, part of the Community Medicine course, aimed to equip participants with vital emergency response skills, reinforcing the university’s commitment to fostering health and safety within the local community.

Supervised by Dr. Souad Belkebir, Director of Medical Education, Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, and a faculty member in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, the sessions were delivered by a group of highly motivated sixth-year medical students. The students—Masa Kamal, Hamza Islim, Mohamed Hajji, Zainab Alalyat, Aileen Masarwa, Sabrine Lafi, and Firas Basharieh—led three interactive workshops on December 11, 12, and 13, 2023, during their clinical training at the Nablus Health Directorate.

This initiative, undertaken in collaboration with the Women and Family Affairs Center in the Al-Makhfiya neighborhood of Nablus, emphasized the importance of early intervention in life-threatening situations. Participants were trained in key life-saving techniques, including Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and effective responses to choking incidents. These sessions provided both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, empowering attendees to respond confidently to emergencies involving both children and adults.

CPR, a critical life-saving intervention in cases of cardiac or respiratory arrest, is highly effective when administered promptly. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends starting CPR with strong, rapid chest compressions. Hands-only CPR, advocated for both untrained bystanders and trained responders alike, has been proven to increase survival rates in emergency situations.

By delivering these sessions, An-Najah National University continues to underscore its role in promoting community health education, furthering its mission to enhance public health and safety through proactive, hands-on learning experiences.
