In a concerted effort to promote community health and enhance public health education, fourth-year students from the Department of Nursing and Midwifery at An-Najah National University’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences organized a series of health awareness sessions at the New Askar Girls' School (UNRWA) on January 21, 23, and 29, 2024. These sessions were conducted as part of the "Nursing Community Health and Public Health" course.
The initiative was supervised by Ms. Shurooq Qadous and clinical instructor Murad Mahdawi, in collaboration with the Palestinian Red Crescent Society and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). The sessions aimed to equip young students with vital knowledge on key health and hygiene practices.
The nursing students led various interactive activities, focusing on practical health education, including:
-
Proper Handwashing Techniques: First-grade students were taught how to wash their hands correctly, with hands-on demonstrations at the school sinks.
-
Physical Activity Promotion: Second- and third-grade students learned about the importance of regular exercise and maintaining an active lifestyle.
-
Correct Sitting Postures and Backpack Use: Third-grade students received guidance on proper sitting postures and the correct way to carry their school bags to avoid potential health issues.
-
Healthy Eating and Obesity Prevention: Fourth-grade students were educated on the principles of healthy eating and the importance of preventing obesity from an early age.
The sessions were designed to engage students in a fun and informative manner, fostering healthy habits that will benefit them throughout their lives. This initiative highlights An-Najah National University’s commitment to integrating community service into its educational programs, while simultaneously promoting public health awareness in local schools.
The team extended their gratitude to Ms. Rose Abu Jeish, principal of New Askar Girls' School, for her warm reception and support in facilitating the sessions.
