As part of the "Nursing Community Health and Clinical Public Health" course, fourth-year nursing students from An-Najah National University's Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences organized a series of educational and awareness sessions at Askar Basic Boys School. The initiative aimed to enhance students' knowledge on a variety of essential health and safety topics, chosen collaboratively with teachers and students to address specific areas where increased awareness was needed.
The sessions were conducted under the guidance of Dr. Shurooq Qadous, a faculty member in the Department of Nursing and Midwifery, and clinical instructor Ms. Nour Mohammad Abu Abdoun, in partnership with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). To support the learning process, the students also prepared educational materials and posters, which were prominently displayed on the school’s bulletin boards as lasting resources.
The awareness campaign addressed critical health and safety topics, customized for each grade level to ensure relevance and engagement:
- Personal Hygiene for First and Second Graders: Emphasizing the importance of hygiene practices, such as handwashing, nail trimming, regular clothing changes, and bathing.
- Healthy Eating for Second and Third Graders: Highlighting the benefits of nutritious meals and a healthy breakfast to improve concentration, energy levels, and overall well-being, while discouraging the consumption of processed foods.
- First Aid for Fifth Graders: Providing practical demonstrations on how to administer first aid in cases of choking and equipping students with basic skills to handle such emergencies.
- Social Media Awareness for Sixth Graders: Discussing the risks associated with social media, appropriate screen time management, and the importance of reporting any suspicious online activity to parents.
- Responding to Tear Gas Exposure for Sixth Graders: Educating students on how to react during tear gas exposure by covering the nose and mouth with a damp cloth to minimize inhalation.
- Anti-Smoking Awareness for Sixth Graders: Raising awareness about the harmful effects of smoking, with a particular focus on the dangers of secondhand smoke and its impact on health and society.
- At the conclusion of the sessions, the organizing team extended their sincere thanks to the school principals for their warm welcome and support in making the program a success. The campaign reinforced the university’s commitment to community engagement and public health education, empowering young students with the knowledge needed to make informed choices about their health and safety.
