A research team from An-Najah National University has published a study in BMC Health Services Research on auditing and improving the use of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Surgical Safety Checklist in Palestinian hospitals.
The study was led by Dr. Abdulsalam Alkaiyat, Vice President For Academic Affairs; Dr. Sari Taha from An-Najah Institute of Global Health; Prof. Sa'ed Zyoud from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences; and Ms. Sanaa Yassin from the Department of Quality and Patient Safety.
The study focused on conducting a comprehensive audit to evaluate the use of the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist before performing surgeries in Palestinian hospitals as part of a Quality Improvement project. It assessed compliance with the checklist and gathered healthcare professionals’ perspectives on its use, reviewing 340 patient records from two hospitals and surveying 80 surgical team members.
The findings showed that while most teams use the checklist, some parts were only partially implemented due to time constraints and limited training. Despite this, participants acknowledged its importance in patient safety. The researchers recommended training workshops and periodic audits to improve adherence.
This study highlights An-Najah’s commitment to quality improvement, research capacity building, and international collaborations to advance healthcare standards.
