The Department of Optometry at the Faculty of Medicine and Allied Medical Sciences, An-Najah National University, organized an orientation session for its new students aimed at strengthening academic communication, introducing the nature of the discipline, outlining study plans, and highlighting professional career pathways.

The session opened with welcoming remarks from Dr. I’thar Beshtawi, Head of the Department of Optometry, who provided a comprehensive overview of the department. She emphasized the importance of optometry within the healthcare system and the vital role optometrists play in diagnosis and vision care. Dr. Beshtawi also reviewed the department’s achievements in education, research, and community service, reaffirming its commitment to delivering high-quality education that meets the latest international standards.

She further highlighted the department’s international standing, noting its membership in the World Council of Optometry and VOSH International (Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity), both prestigious global organizations dedicated to advancing the profession and strengthening vision care services worldwide.

The orientation included an overview of the academic curriculum, faculty members, and the laboratories and teaching clinics where students conduct their practical training. Students had the opportunity to engage directly with faculty, ask questions, and receive guidance to help them prepare academically for their university journey.

The Optometry Student Association also presented an overview of its curricular and extracurricular activities, which include specialized workshops, awareness campaigns, volunteer programs, and social events designed to enrich the student experience and develop both personal and professional skills.

The event concluded with a guided tour of the department’s facilities and university optometry teaching clinics, which are among the program’s most important training resources. These clinics provide students with hands-on experience in developing clinical and practical skills under the supervision of experienced academics and practitioners.

Optometry is one of the University’s advanced health disciplines, addressing the growing needs of the labor market by preparing graduates who are scientifically and professionally qualified to deliver high-quality vision care services.
